Middlethorpe Hall, York, is a William III country house, close to the city, set in 20 acres of its own gardens and parkland. Built in 1699, it was once the home of the famous diarist, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu.

After a period of neglect, Middlethorpe Hall was purchased and restored by Historic House Hotels who also own Hartwell House, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, and Bodysgallen Hall, North Wales. The house is now decorated with antiques and fine pictures carefully chosen as consistent with the period of the house. The gardens and parkland have also been restored and include ha ha's, a white garden, a walled garden, a small lake and some beautiful specimen trees.

Middlethorpe Hall is well known for its comfortable, luxurious atmosphere and the hotel's individual guest rooms and cottage suites are no exception.

The comfortable and fully equipped bedrooms, each decorated individually, are both in the house and in the attractively restored 18th century courtyard next to it. There are several room types ranging from single rooms to a deluxe suite in the main house. Ten of the rooms are in the main house, seventeen in the 18th Century classical courtyard, as well as a garden suite and two suites in an adjacent cottage.

The panelled dining rooms overlooking the gardens and the imaginative food, follows the hotel's theme of traditional excellence. They have been much praised in all the guide books, and awarded three Rosettes by the Automobile Association. The Dining Rooms also feature a well chosen wine list reflecting quality and variety.

Luncheon is priced at £17.00 for 2 courses or £23.00 for 3 courses and a three course dinner is charged at £39.00. Sunday luncheon is £24.50. As well as our two dining rooms, there are facilities for private dining which are ideal for private entertaining. Afternoon Tea is £14.95.

An essential part of a visit to Middlethorpe Hall is the opportunity to relax and enjoy the pleasures of the Spa. Swim in the warm clear water of the inviting pool lined with blue mosaic tiles, relax in the steam room, saunas and the bubbling waters of the whirlpool bath.

Experienced therapists offer a wide range of beauty treatments using Clarins, E'SPA, Jessica and St. Tropez products. Middlethorpe Spa Health and Beauty Days and Half Days and individual treatments are available to guests and non-residents.

Residential guests and Club members have full use of the Spa with its indoor swimming pool, whirlpool spa bath, steam room, sauna, gymnasium, and club room. Beauty treatments are available for non-residents and non-members.

For conferences and retreats, Middlethorpe Hall's estate provides an exclusive environment in which privacy and confidentiality are assured. Discerning business travellers will be pleased to find themselves in a setting where the executive services and facilities they require, as well as leisure activities they enjoy are close at hand.
