The George of Stamford is one of England's greatest coaching inns. It retains the charm and atmosphere of its long history yet offers today's guests every modern comfort.
The exact age of The George is not known, but historians have referred to it as "A very ancient hostelry, once belonging to the Abbots of Croyland".
Consequently it is possible that it was standing in 947 A.D., and was included with much of Stamford Baron in a gift made by Turkotul, chancellor King Edred, to the Abbey of Croyland. Shortly after the Norman Conquest the lands and buildings that Croyland Abbey held south of the Welland passed into the possession of the Abbey of Peterborough. Therefore The George, to have been owned by the Abbots of Croyland, must be nearly 900 years old at least, and one thousand years seems its probable age.
Stamford in Lincolnshire is just one mile from the A1, one and a half hours north of London. The A47 between Peterborough and Leicester passes just five miles away, and Cambridge is only forty-five minutes to the south. Peterborough (fifteen minutes away by rail) is just an hour from London by train. The George Hotel is only a few hundred yards from Stamford train station. From London, it is necessary to change trains at Peterborough.
Stamford is an architectural gem, a stone-built town of charm and grandeur. The entrance to the town from the south, past Burghley's "pepper pots" gateway, is always breathtaking. The first sight of the town is of St Martins down the hill to the George, a view described by Walter Scott as the finest between London and York.
Within easy reach of The George are Burghley House, Peterborough and the beautiful market towns of Uppingham, Oakham and Oundle. Crammed with unspoilt villages and beautiful rivers (the Welland and the Nene) we are in an area of little-known beauty.
Dining
A fine restaurant is what distinguishes a great hotel from a good one. In magnificent oak-panelled surroundings, traditional yet imaginative English dishes of the highest quality are accompanied by a wine list rated as "outstanding" in both the Egon Ronay and Good Food Guides.
More informal meals are served in the light and airy Garden Lounge or outside in the ivy-clad courtyard, when the weather smiles.
The York Bar (Hotel bar of the year 2005 Winner - Good pub guide) offers quick light snacks with a pint of Adnams real ale or our guest beer.
