The Haycock is a 16th Century coaching inn on the Old Great North Road, set in the picturesque village of Wansford near Peterborough, surrounded by unspoilt Cambridgeshire stone cottages. This inn has a remarkable and eventful past. Both Mary Queen of Scots and the young Queen Victoria have been visitors. Is it even said The Haycock once changed hands over a game of cards.
The Haycock is locally renowned for its 18th Century sign which depicts drunken Barnabee on his haycock. The story tells that one day Barnabee fell asleep and awoke several hours later to find himself afloat in the river. He asked a passer by where he was, "Wansford" was the reply, to which the amazed Barnabee shouted "What, Wansford-in-England"?
